The module can execute tracing, analysis of customers affected and analysis of outage statistics for posted network data in the state In use. To improve performance, the topology is stored in a structure called topology analyzer. The topology analyzer is stored on the web server.

The topology analyzer is started automatically as soon as the first user starts Operator and it will continue to run for as long as the web server is running.

Changes to the network made through posting changesets will automatically update the topology analyzer. The topology analyzer does not need to be reset due to changes made to a network that is in use. It is however possible to manually reset the topology analyzer through Operator > Reset the topology analyzer. The first action when troubleshooting in Operator is always to restart the topology analyzer, to ensure that the network is up to date.

There is by default a question whether the topology analyzer should be reset every time a changeset is posted. This question can however be turned off which is why it is important to make sure the topology analyzer is up to date.
