Symbol editor

The symbol editor is an administrative tool used to create and edit symbols. To be able to start the Symbol editor, the user needs to have the role EDITSYMBOLS.

User interface

Main window - The main window is divided into six areas: the Graphic view, the Menu bar, the Toolbar, the Name bar, the Sidebar and the Status bar.

Editing window - The editing window is divided into six areas: the Graphic view, the Menu bar, the Toolbar, the Name bar, the Sidebar and the Status bar.

Graphical view

In the graphical view it is possible to load symbol fonts.

Sidebar

In the sidebar there are two tabs: Map and Load symbol font

Load symbol font is opened by default when the application starts and lists the symbol fonts that already exists. When selecting a symbol font the available symbols will be loaded in the graphical view.

Turn sidebar On/off with F9 or use the menu alternative Settings.

Title bar

At the top of the main window the Title bar is found. The title bar displays (from left to right):

Application icon

The name of the current changeset (and the system-ID for the changeset)

Application name

Version number

Symbol font (if one has been chosen)

Status bar

At the bottom of the application window the Status bar is found. The status bar is divided in four parts that displays different types of information. For instance, it displays information about the current active tool, an instruction for the active tool, a message and information about the marker e.g. coordinates.

Menu bar

The menu bar contains all the menu options in the application.

Toolbar

The toolbar contains a set of tool buttons that gives quick access to the most common tools in the application. By selecting a tool button you will activate the corresponding command. For more information about all the toolbar buttons see section Tool buttons.

Tool buttons in the main window

Below is a brief description of the tool buttons found in the application's main window. Many tools can also be activated by a keyboard shortcut, which are shown below in parentesis.

New symbol

Opens a new editing window (Ctrl - N).

Load symbol font

Opens the Load Symbol Font tab which allows you to select which symbol font you want to work with (Ctrl - B).

Edit symbol

Lets you edit symbols (Ctrl - E).

Print...

Opens paper and printer settings to be able to print (Ctrl - P).

Zoom in

Show a smaller area in the graphic view (increase the map scale).

Zoom out

Display a larger area in the graphic view (reduce the map scale).

Pan

Move the map in any direction. (Hold down the SHIFT key to activate the Pan tool.)

Refresh

Redraw the contents of the active graphics view (F5).

Previous location

Go back to previously displayed sections in the graphics view. (Alt-Left) Can also be done with the mouse's back button if available.

Cancel data loading

Cancel loading of data from the database.

Graphical view

In the graphical view it is possible to edit a symbol.

Sidebar

In the sidebar there are three tabs: Map, place object and Order graphics.

place object makes it possible to place a number of objects in the graphical view

Order graphics makes it possible to change line color, fill color and order for placed objects

Title bar

The name of the symbol (if one has been chosen for editing)

The name of the symbol font (if one has been chosen)

Tool buttons in the edit window

Below is a brief description of the tool buttons found in the application's editing window. Many tools can also be activated by a keyboard shortcut, which are shown below in parentesis.

New symbol

Opens a new editing window (Ctrl - N).

Save symbol

Saves the created symbol (Ctrl - S).

Undo

Undo the last action on a graphic object and go back one step in the editing process (Ctrl - Z).

Redo

Redo an action on a graphic object that you have undone (Ctrl - Y).

Select

Select one or more components in the graphic view (F7).

Print...

Opens paper and printer settings to be able to print (Ctrl - P).

Add vertex

Create a new vertex to a component.

Move vertex

Change the position of a vertex of a component.

Delete vertex

Remove a vertex on a component.

Extend vertex

Extends or shortens a line segment while maintaining direction. The line segment automatically stops at a crossing line.

Rotate component

Rotate a component around the component's insertion point.

Move component

Change the position of a component in the graphics view.

Delete component

Delete a component in the graphics view.

Create hole in polygon

Create a hole in a polygon in the graphics view.

Remove hole from polygon

Delete a hole in a polygon in the graphics view.

Zoom in

Show a smaller area in the graphic view (increase the map scale).

Display a larger area in the graphic view (reduce the map scale).

Pan

Move the map in any direction. (Hold down the SHIFT key to activate the Pan tool.)
