Substation

Substations can be designed in different ways depending on the network configuration and customer requirements. Regardless of the station type, the station is built in the same way by first creating its basic structure with busbars and bays, and then adding transformers and other equipment.

Primary substations are often unique and are therefore typically built manually or by reusing parts from existing stations. Secondary substations, on the other hand, are often based on standardized designs and are therefore well suited to be saved and reused as templates. See the section Create and reuse templates for information about reusing saved templates.

Many objects in dpPower can be displayed in multiple views. For example, an object may be created in the schema but lack a map component. In that case, the object exists in the model but is not visible on the map until a map component is placed. Use the schema to build the electrical structure. Use the map to specify the objects’ geographic locations.

The example below shows how to build a substation with two busbars and a transformer, and how to then place a substation symbol on the map.

Before you start drawing, enable the grid. The grid makes it easier to position objects with consistent spacing and create a uniform schematic.

Select Settings > Grid > Show grid.

Also enable Snap to Grid for additional assistance when placing objects.

 

Create a primary substation with two busbars and a transformer

1.Place a Substation primary in the schematic view. Select the primary substation with the highest voltage level in the facility.

2.Select the substation and place an upper Substation busbar by drawing a line. The upper busbar normally represents the substation’s highest voltage level.

If the grid and snap-to-grid options are enabled, it is easier to position the busbars with consistent spacing. For example, if the grid size is set to 5 points, you can draw each busbar 5 points long and leave 2 points between the busbars.

3.Place a Substation busbar for the lower voltage level below the first busbar.

4.Place a Transformer:

a.Select an object that has the placement option From a busbar, create transformer bay, for example Circuit breaker.

b.Select the first busbar and drag the transformer bay out from the busbar.

c.Repeat for the second busbar and place the transformer bay opposite the first one.

d.Place the transformer by first selecting one transformer bay and then the other. The transformer is automatically placed between the bays.

e.In the transformer attribute form, enter the basic transformer and network calculation data, such as Transformer type and Rated power.

 

Place station in map

1.Split the view so you can view both schema and map at the same time:

a.Select Window > Split view.

b.Left-click in the center of the graphical view.

c.Select one view and choose a map view from the top drop-down menu in the Map tab sidebar.

2.In the schematic view, right-click on the ID of the station you just placed and select Object > Place component for object > Substation symbol map.

3.Place the station symbol in the map view.

4.In the map view, right-click on the station symbol and select Object > Place component for object > Text ID.

5.Place the station ID in the map.

After the station symbol has been placed on the map, you can switch between the station’s schematic and map components by right-clicking the station and select Show > Show in..., and then select the desired view.
